What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students show addition as putting together or adding to and subtraction as taking apart or taking from. They represent these actions with objects, drawings, gestures, words, expressions, or equations.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a simple story, a student chooses addition or subtraction and models the action accurately. The student can show the same story with counters, a drawing, and a matching equation.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose an operation from one word without following what happens in the story. They may reverse the numbers in a take-away equation or draw a result that does not match.

How to Assess It

Tell this story: Five birds sit on a fence, and two fly away. Ask the student to act it out, draw it, and write a matching equation.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use counters on two paper mats labeled together and apart to act out addition and subtraction stories.

  2. Ask, "How can one story be shown with fingers, a drawing, and an equation?"

  3. Play a story-card game where students draw a card, choose an operation, and build the matching model before answering.

  4. Set up a pretend snack table where students add plates for arrivals and remove plates when classmates leave.
