Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students place two objects together and compare one shared measurable attribute, such as length or weight. They describe which object has more or less of that attribute.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student aligns two strips at one endpoint and identifies the longer strip. The student can also hold two objects and describe one as heavier or lighter than the other.
Common Misconceptions: Students may compare lengths without aligning endpoints or compare different attributes for the two objects. They may also assume the larger-looking object must be heavier.
How to Assess It: Give the student two paper strips with different lengths. Ask the student to align them, identify the longer strip, and describe the difference.

Lesson moves

Align pairs of ribbons at a taped endpoint, compare their lengths directly, and describe each difference with longer or shorter.
Ask students whether a large sponge can be lighter than a small rock, then compare both objects by holding them.
Play attribute match by drawing two object cards, naming one shared attribute, and making a direct comparison.
Fill one classroom container with cubes, pour them into the other, and describe which container holds more for a cleanup job.
