Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students arrange three objects from shortest to longest. They also compare two objects that cannot be placed together by checking each against the same reference object.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student aligns three strips at one endpoint and orders them correctly. If a pencil is longer than a string and the string is longer than a crayon, the student concludes the pencil is longer than the crayon.
Common Misconceptions: Students may compare objects without aligning their endpoints or may judge by height, color, or thickness. When using a reference, they may forget that both objects must be compared with the same reference length.
How to Assess It: Give the student three paper strips to order by length. Then place two objects where they cannot be brought together and ask the student to compare them using a fourth strip as the reference.

Lesson moves

Have students align three classroom objects against a taped baseline and place them in order from shortest to longest.
Ask students to explain how a string can prove which of two desks is longer without moving either desk.
Play a mystery-length game where partners compare hidden objects by recording how each relates to one shared craft stick.
Choose the shortest, middle, and longest book for a shelf, then explain the order using direct or indirect comparisons.
