What Students Need to Do
- Students use supplementary, complementary, vertical, and adjacent angle facts in multi-step problems. They write and solve simple equations with a linear expression on one side to determine unknown angles.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student sets 3x + 10 equal to a vertical angle measuring 70 degrees and finds x = 20. The student then identifies an adjacent supplementary angle as 110 degrees.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume adjacent angles are always equal or confuse complementary and supplementary totals. They may solve for x but fail to substitute it to find the requested angle measure.
How to Assess It
- Show intersecting lines with one angle labeled 4x + 5 degrees and its vertical angle labeled 85 degrees. Ask for x and an adjacent angle measure with justification.
