What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students relate range and the choice of mean, median, or mode to a distribution’s shape and context. They explain why one center may be more useful than another.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student compares center measures and range for a displayed distribution. The student chooses a center based on skew, unusual values, or the question being asked.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may always choose mean because it uses every value. They may use range as a center or ignore how context affects which summary is useful.
How to Assess It
- Give a skewed set of wait times with one large value. Ask students to calculate range and choose mean, median, or mode to describe a typical wait.
