What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students recognize that mean, median, or mode summarizes a data set’s center with one number. They use range to summarize variation with one number.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student calculates or identifies mean, median, mode, and range correctly. The student explains that center describes a typical location while range describes overall spread.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse mean with median or include frequency labels as data values. They may calculate range by adding the endpoints instead of subtracting minimum from maximum.
How to Assess It
- Give the data 3, 5, 5, 7, 10. Ask students for mean, median, mode, and range, then explain what center and variation describe.
