What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare quantitative data from random samples or populations using measures of center and variability. They draw informal conclusions using mean, median, mode, range, or interquartile range as appropriate.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student compares typical values and spread, then states a conclusion supported by the measures. The student identifies the groups and avoids claiming more than the samples support.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may compare only means while ignoring very different spreads. They may treat a sample result as proof about every member of a population.
How to Assess It
- Give summaries for two random samples with medians 12 and 17 and interquartile ranges 3 and 9. Ask students to compare center and variability in context.
