What Students Need to Do
- Students interpret the unit rate a/b for a ratio a:b, where the second quantity is not zero. They use “per” language to explain what the rate means in context.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student explains that a ratio of 3 cups of flour to 4 cups of sugar gives 3/4 cup of flour per cup of sugar. The student labels both quantities in the unit rate.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may reverse the ratio, report the total of both quantities, or omit the units. They may also try to form a unit rate when the second quantity is zero.
How to Assess It
- A group pays $75 for 15 hamburgers. Ask students to find the unit rate and explain “$5 per hamburger” in the situation.
