What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students describe how two quantities are related using ratio language and notation. They keep the quantities in a consistent order and distinguish each part from the total.
What Mastery Looks Like
- For 3 red tiles and 5 blue tiles, a student states the ratio of red to blue as 3 to 5, 3:5, or 3/5. The student identifies both quantities clearly.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may reverse the order of the quantities or compare one part with the total when asked for part to part. They may treat a ratio as subtraction.
How to Assess It
- Show 4 pencils and 7 pens and ask students to write and read the ratio of pens to pencils, then explain the order.
