What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students judge whether answers to multistep whole-number problems are reasonable. They use mental math and estimation, including rounding, to check results.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student estimates before or after calculating and compares the estimate with the exact answer. The student identifies an unreasonable result and locates a likely error.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat an estimate as the exact answer. They may round inconsistently or accept any nearby-looking result without checking the problem context.
How to Assess It
- Give the claim that 398 plus 207 plus 191 equals 1,796. Ask students to use rounding or mental math to decide whether it is reasonable.
