What Students Need to Do
- Students multiply whole-number side lengths to find rectangle areas in real and mathematical problems. They use rectangles to represent whole-number products.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student finds the area of a 9-foot by 4-foot garden as 36 square feet. The student draws a matching rectangle and explains what each factor represents.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add side lengths or use perimeter units. They may reverse a dimension's label or draw an array that does not match the factors.
How to Assess It
- Present a rectangular rug 8 feet long and 5 feet wide. Ask for its area, a labeled model, and an explanation of the product.
