What Students Need to Do
- Students tile rectangles with unit squares and connect the total tile count to multiplying whole-number side lengths. They explain why rows times columns gives the same area.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student tiles a 4-by-6 rectangle with 24 unit squares and writes 4 × 6 = 24 square units. The model has no gaps or overlaps.

- Students may count grid lines, add side lengths, or tile with unequal units. They may multiply correctly but omit the connection to rows and columns.
How to Assess It
- Give students a 5-by-7 rectangle and unit tiles. Ask them to find the area by tiling and multiplication and explain why the results match.
