What Students Need to Do: Students decide whether a collection of up to 20 objects contains an odd or even number. They pair objects to justify the classification.
What Mastery Looks Like: The student pairs all objects in an even collection with none left over. For an odd collection, the student identifies the single unpaired object.
Common Misconceptions: Students may call a number even because it contains an even digit. They may lose track while pairing scattered objects and misclassify the group.
How to Assess It: Give students collections of 13 and 18 counters. Ask them to classify each collection and show pairs as evidence.

Lesson moves

Have students pair up 7, 12, and 19 counters and record whether one counter remains.
Ask students why exactly one leftover object signals an odd number.
Play Odd or Even Sort with picture cards showing collections up to 20.
Count chairs at several classroom tables and decide whether each group can form complete pairs.
