What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students answer how many for sets arranged in lines, rectangular arrays, circles, and scattered groups. They count up to 20 in organized arrangements and up to 10 when objects are scattered.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student counts every object once and states the total for each allowed arrangement. The student uses a tracking strategy such as touching, moving, or marking objects.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count the first object twice when objects form a circle. They may skip or recount scattered objects because there is no clear starting point.
How to Assess It
- Show 18 counters in an array and 9 counters scattered on a page. Ask how many are in each set and watch the student's tracking strategy.
