What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students say number words in order while pairing one word with each object. They track the objects so every object is counted once and none are skipped.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student touches or moves each object while saying one number word. The student's words and movements stay matched from the first object to the last.

Common Misconceptions

Students may say number words faster than they point, count one object twice, or skip an object. They may also move an object without giving it a number word.

How to Assess It

Ask the student to count 12 scattered counters while pointing to or moving each one. Watch for exactly one number word per counter.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Move 12 buttons into a cup one at a time, saying one number word for each button moved.

  2. Ask, "How can touching or moving each object help us count every object exactly once?"

  3. Play count-and-check with partners, where one child counts a scattered set and the other watches for skips or repeats.

  4. Set one napkin at each pretend table place while counting aloud, then check that every place has one.
