The Standard
Partition circles and rectangles into two, three, or four equal shares. Describe the shares using the words halves, thirds, half of, a third of, etc. Describe the whole as two halves, three thirds, four fourths. Recognize that equal shares of identical wholes need not have the same shape.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students divide circles and rectangles into two, three, or four equal shares and name the shares. They recognize that equal shares of identical wholes can have different shapes.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student partitions a rectangle into three equal strips and names each strip one third. The student recognizes two different four-part partitions of identical rectangles as fourths when every part has equal area.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count the pieces without checking that their areas are equal. They may reject an equal partition because its pieces have different shapes from another correct partition.
How to Assess It
- Give the student two identical paper rectangles. Ask for two different ways to make four equal shares and have the student explain why both show fourths.
