What Students Need to Do
- Students partition shapes into parts with equal areas. They name each part as a unit fraction of the whole, using the number of equal parts as the denominator.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student divides a rectangle into six equal-area parts and labels each part 1/6. The student explains that the six parts can differ in orientation but must cover equal areas.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count parts without checking their areas or use unequal pieces. They may label each part with the numerator equal to the number of pieces instead of using 1.
How to Assess It
- Give students a rectangle and ask them to partition it into four equal-area parts, label each part, and explain the denominator.
