What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students describe a two-digit number as a quantity of tens and ones. They connect teen numbers, multiples of ten, models, and written numerals to the same place-value structure.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student explains that 47 is four tens and seven ones and builds it with bundled sticks. The student identifies 14 as one ten and four ones and 60 as six tens and zero ones.

Common Misconceptions

Students may read the digits separately without connecting them to their values. They may reverse the tens and ones or think the zero in 60 means the number has no value.

How to Assess It

Ask the student to build 36 with tens and ones, write the numeral, and explain what each digit represents.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build two-digit numbers with ten-sticks and single cubes, then match each model to a numeral card.

  2. Ask students how 16 and 60 differ even though both numerals use 1 and 6.

  3. Play place-value match with models, numerals, and cards naming the number of tens and ones.

  4. Count classroom supplies into groups of ten and leftovers, then write the matching two-digit total.
