What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students rearrange formulas in Algebra I to isolate a quantity of interest. They apply valid inverse operations to both sides while preserving equivalent relationships.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student isolates the requested variable in a multivariable formula and records algebraically equivalent steps. Substitution into the original and rewritten forms gives matching values.

Common Misconceptions

Students may divide only one term in a sum, move a term by changing its sign without showing an operation, or confuse subscripts with factors. They may stop before the target variable is alone.

How to Assess It

Ask students to rewrite A equals one-half h times the sum of b one and b two for h, then verify with numerical values.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use balance cards for formula terms and perform the same inverse operation on both sides.

  2. Ask students which operation should be undone first when the target variable appears inside grouped factors.

  3. Play formula relay by passing a multivariable formula through one justified rearrangement at each station.

  4. Rearrange a distance, temperature, or geometry formula to solve for the measurement needed in a practical task.
