What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students represent two-step whole-number problems with equations or expressions. They use a letter to stand for the unknown quantity.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student writes one or more representations that preserve the problem’s two actions. The letter marks the requested value, and every number matches the context.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use a letter as a unit label instead of an unknown. They may combine operations in an expression that does not match the story order.
How to Assess It
- A class buys 5 packs of 6 pencils and gives 8 pencils away. Ask students to represent the unknown remainder with one or more equations or expressions using a letter, without solving.
