What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students rewrite an expression into an equivalent form that makes a relationship easier to see. They explain what the new form reveals about the quantities in a mathematical or real-world problem.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student rewrites x + 0.20x as 1.20x and explains that both forms represent a 20% increase. The student chooses the form that communicates the relationship more clearly.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think expressions with different appearances must have different values or combine terms that are not alike. They may also rewrite correctly without explaining what the new form reveals.

How to Assess It

Ask students to rewrite p + 0.08p in an equivalent form. Have them explain how each form represents an original price plus 8% tax.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Combine a strip labeled x with a strip labeled 0.25x, then replace both with one strip labeled 1.25x.

  2. Ask students what 4n + 2n reveals differently from 6n, even though the expressions are equivalent.

  3. Match equivalent-expression cards to context cards, then explain which form makes the relationship easiest to see.

  4. Rewrite a price plus tip as one multiplication expression and explain how the new form shows the final-price factor.
