Students choose equivalent forms that expose useful features of a quantity in Algebra I. They factor quadratics, complete squares, or apply exponent properties when those forms clarify zeros, extrema, or growth.

The student produces an equivalent expression and names the feature made visible by the new form. Algebraic work is correct, and expanding or substituting confirms equivalence.

Students may rewrite an expression correctly but fail to explain what the form reveals. They may choose a familiar method that hides the feature the problem asks about.

How to Assess It

Give x squared minus 6x plus 5 and 2^(2x) times 2^(x minus 1). Ask for useful equivalent forms and explain the feature each reveals.
