What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students conduct research to answer questions or solve problems, adjusting the inquiry when its scope does not fit. They synthesize multiple sources to show a coherent understanding of the subject.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student narrows or broadens a question for a workable investigation and selects sources that address it. The final response integrates ideas across sources rather than listing separate summaries.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may collect facts before defining a clear question or treat each source as a separate summary. They may keep an unworkable question even when the evidence suggests a better focus.
How to Assess It
- Give a problem, a broad question, and three source excerpts. Ask students to revise the question and write a synthesis that connects evidence from all three sources.
