What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students investigate questions with multiple sources, refocusing as evidence develops. They generate related questions that open more than one productive path for further exploration.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student revises the inquiry in response to findings and combines information across sources. Several related questions identify distinct, researchable directions for continued work.

Common Misconceptions

Students may collect facts before defining a clear question or treat each source as a separate summary. They may keep an unworkable question even when the evidence suggests a better focus.

How to Assess It

Provide a source set and broad question. Ask students to refine the inquiry, synthesize two findings, and propose two distinct avenues for further research.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Arrange question, subtopic, and source cards into a research plan, then remove one irrelevant source.

  2. Ask students how new evidence should change an inquiry and require a revised question.

  3. Run a source scavenger hunt in which teams earn points for facts that directly answer the question.

  4. Investigate a school concern and prepare an evidence-based answer for classmates or administrators.
