What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students investigate teacher-provided or self-generated questions with multiple sources. They refocus the inquiry when new information makes the original question too broad, narrow, or unproductive.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student gathers relevant information from several sources and notices when the inquiry needs adjustment. The revised question produces a clearer, supportable answer.

Common Misconceptions

Students may collect facts before defining a clear question or treat each source as a separate summary. They may keep an unworkable question even when the evidence suggests a better focus.

How to Assess It

Provide three source summaries and a broad question. Ask students to select useful sources, revise the question for focus, and explain why the revision helps.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Arrange question, subtopic, and source cards into a research plan, then remove one irrelevant source.

  2. Ask students how new evidence should change an inquiry and require a revised question.

  3. Run a source scavenger hunt in which teams earn points for facts that directly answer the question.

  4. Investigate a school concern and prepare an evidence-based answer for classmates or administrators.
