What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students distinguish shades of meaning among words describing states of mind and degrees of certainty. They compare terms such as knew, believed, suspected, heard, and wondered in context.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can order or group certainty words and explain their different evidence levels. The student chooses a word that accurately represents what a speaker knows and how the speaker knows it.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat all thinking words as synonyms or assume heard means the information is true. They may rank certainty from personal preference instead of the word's meaning and context.

How to Assess It

Give students a scenario and the words knew, believed, suspected, and wondered. Ask them to choose the fitting word and explain the certainty level.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place states-of-mind cards on a certainty continuum, then add evidence cards that justify each position.

  2. Ask, ‘What would the character need to know rather than suspect this, and which word fits now?’

  3. Play Certainty Detective by matching statements to knew, believed, suspected, heard, or wondered with reasons.

  4. Examine claims in a weather forecast and label which wording signals knowledge, prediction, report, or uncertainty.
