Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students name familiar rules and tell why people should follow them. They connect rules with safety, fairness, and helping a group work well.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a classroom or playground situation, a student identifies the rule and gives a clear reason for it. The student can predict what might happen if the rule is ignored.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think rules matter only because breaking them leads to punishment. They may also believe rules do not apply when adults are absent or when no one gets hurt.
How to Assess It: Show a picture of children running in a school hallway. Ask, "What rule should they follow, and why?"

Lesson moves

Sort picture cards showing safe and unsafe classroom choices, then explain where each card belongs.
Ask, "What could happen if everyone talked during story time?" Record each student's answer with words or a drawing.
Play Rule Charades, where students act out a classroom rule while classmates name it and explain its purpose.
Take a school walk to find posted rules, then discuss how each one helps students, staff, or visitors.
