What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain why people should protect one another’s freedoms and make choices that help the whole community. They describe how actions can affect both individuals and groups.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can identify whose rights are involved in a school or community situation. They can suggest a fair response and explain how it helps everyone.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think rights allow people to do anything they want. They may also confuse helping the majority with making a fair choice that considers everyone.
How to Assess It
- Ask: “The class wants quiet reading time, but one student needs directions read aloud. What should the teacher do, and why?”
