What Students Need to Do: Students compare who controlled each approach, what former Confederate states had to do, and how quickly states could return. They connect those differences to political power and rights in Georgia.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can match Lincoln with the 10 percent loyalty rule and broad amnesty. The student distinguishes Johnson’s pardon-centered approach from Congress’s military districts, Black male voting rights, new constitutions, and Fourteenth Amendment requirement.
Common Misconceptions: Students often treat Lincoln’s proposal as a completed policy, though his assassination ended his role in Reconstruction. They mix up Johnson’s presidential pardons with Congress’s military districts. They may assume all three approaches gave freedpeople the same political protections.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Make a three-row chart for Lincoln, Johnson, and Congress. For each, list one readmission requirement and label the approach lenient or strict, with one reason.

Lesson moves

Give pairs twelve policy cards to sort under Lincoln, Johnson, or Congress, then require them to justify two placements with evidence.
Ask students to write: Which plan changed Southern political power most, and what two features support your answer?
Run a three-column relay where teams place requirement cards correctly, then correct one rival team’s choices.
Compare Reconstruction readmission rules with a school club’s conditions for reinstating members after violations, focusing on authority, fairness, and enforcement.
