What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how a growing Indian national identity and demands for self-rule challenged British colonial rule. They connect the Indian National Congress, Gandhi’s nonviolent campaigns, boycotts, and civil disobedience to independence in 1947.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can build a clear cause-and-effect chain from British rule to organized nationalist action, mass participation, and British withdrawal. The student uses details such as the Salt March, Quit India Movement, or Britain’s weakness after World War II.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat Gandhi as the only person responsible for independence. Some think nonviolent resistance meant there was no conflict or British repression. Others confuse independence with the partition that created India and Pakistan.
