What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how contaminated or limited water affects farms and households. They connect water quality and distribution to crop production, health, cost, and daily water use.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can trace clear cause-and-effect links from a water problem to specific results for irrigation and drinking supplies. They support explanations with evidence from a map, data table, or short case study.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat water pollution and water scarcity as the same problem. They may assume irrigation water quality does not affect crops, or that every community receives an equal share of clean water.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A village receives less river water, and the remaining water contains sewage. Explain one likely effect on farming and one on drinking water.

Ways to Teach It
Use measuring cups and colored water to divide a limited supply among farm and household groups, then record which needs remain unmet.
Write six sentences answering: Who should receive limited clean water first, farms or households, and what evidence supports your choice?
Sort cards labeled sewage, salt, illness, crop loss, high prices, and rationing into causes, effects, and linked chains.
Compare water access data for Jordan and Iraq, then write one claim about effects on homes and farms.
