What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify natural and human causes, including monsoon rains, river systems, coal burning, vehicle exhaust, factory emissions, and rapid urban growth. They connect each cause to health, environmental, social, and economic effects in India and China.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can build accurate cause-and-effect chains for both countries using specific examples. The student can explain similarities and differences without treating conditions in India and China as identical.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume flooding is caused only by heavy rain or that monsoons are always harmful. They may confuse smog with greenhouse gases or name pollution without identifying its sources. They may also use one explanation for both countries and ignore geography or urban growth.

How to Assess It

On an exit ticket, have students complete two cause-and-effect chains, one for air pollution and one for flooding, with evidence from each country.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups cause, event, and effect cards to arrange into accurate chains for India and China, then defend one chain.

  2. Ask students to write which issue creates the greater risk for city residents, using two specific facts.

  3. Play a card-matching relay where teams pair pollution and flood causes with effects, locations, and possible responses.

  4. Compare current air quality readings and flood alerts from Delhi, Mumbai, Beijing, and Shanghai, then discuss how residents might adjust daily plans.
