What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify major sources of air pollution in the United Kingdom, including vehicle exhaust, industry, power generation, and home heating. They connect these sources to health problems, acid rain, and damage to plants, wildlife, and buildings.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can build accurate cause-and-effect chains from a pollution source to a specific result. They can use examples such as traffic emissions causing breathing problems or industrial emissions contributing to acid rain.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think factories are the only source or that air pollution affects only London. They may confuse air pollution with climate change or assume smog is harmless fog.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: Name two sources of air pollution in the United Kingdom and explain one effect of each source.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs source, pollutant, and effect cards, then have students build and explain three accurate cause-and-effect chains.
Ask students to write: Which source of United Kingdom air pollution should leaders address first, and what evidence supports your choice?
Play Cause or Effect: read a statement aloud, and teams hold up a labeled card before explaining their answer.
Open a current United Kingdom air-quality map, choose one city, and connect its reading to likely health advice.
