What Students Need to Do: Students explain how leaders are chosen and how the executive and legislature share power in each system. They compare the role of a prime minister with the role of a president.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can classify a government from a short description and cite details that support their choice. They can explain that a prime minister depends on legislative support, while a president is chosen separately.
Common Misconceptions: Students often think voters directly elect a prime minister nationwide. They may assume parliamentary governments always have monarchs, or that a president controls the legislature.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Country A elects lawmakers who choose the executive. Country B elects its executive separately. Name each system and explain one difference.

Lesson moves

Give pairs role cards for voters, legislators, a prime minister, and a president, then have them build two government flowcharts.
Ask which system can replace its executive more quickly and why, then have students answer using the legislature’s role in each system.
Run a sorting race with feature cards such as separate elections, confidence votes, cabinet members, and fixed executive terms.
Compare a UK prime minister’s selection with a US presidential election using two short news reports and a side-by-side chart.
