Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students match each wartime leader to a country, title, and side in the war. They also explain that Truman became president after Roosevelt died.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student correctly links Roosevelt and Truman to the United States, Churchill to Britain, and Stalin to the Soviet Union. The student links Hitler to Germany, Mussolini to Italy, and Hirohito to Japan.
Common Misconceptions: Students may place Stalin with the Axis because he was a dictator. They may call Churchill a president, confuse Mussolini with Germany, or identify Hirohito as a military general.
How to Assess It: Give students a blank chart listing the seven leaders. Ask them to add each leader's country, role, and Allied or Axis connection.

Lesson moves

Have students place leader cards and country flags onto labeled Allied and Axis mats, then add each leader's title.
Ask students to write which two leaders guided the United States during the war and explain why leadership changed.
Play a matching game with three card sets: leader names, countries, and roles.
Give pairs wartime newspaper headlines and ask them to identify the named leader, country, and likely side in the conflict.
