What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students place key wartime events in the European or Pacific theater and arrange them in time. They explain what happened and why each event mattered. They describe the Holocaust accurately and respectfully as Nazi Germany’s systematic murder of six million Jewish people and millions of other victims.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student connects Pearl Harbor to U.S. entry, D-Day to Allied progress in Europe, and Iwo Jima to the Pacific advance. The student distinguishes VE Day from VJ Day. The student explains who carried out the Holocaust, who was targeted, and that it occurred over years.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often place Pearl Harbor or Iwo Jima in Europe, or assume D-Day ended the entire war. They may swap VE and VJ Days or treat both as one surrender. Some think the Holocaust was a battle or happened only in concentration camps.
How to Assess It
- Give students an exit ticket listing Pearl Harbor, D-Day, Iwo Jima, VE Day, and VJ Day. Have them order and label each, then write one accurate sentence defining the Holocaust.
