Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students identify where Germany and Japan used military force to gain territory before and during World War II. They describe key invasions and explain how expansion widened the war.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students correctly locate Poland, China, and other invaded areas on a map. They connect Germany with expansion in Europe and Japan with expansion in Asia, using accurate examples.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think the war began only when the United States entered in 1941. They may confuse German and Japanese actions or treat Pearl Harbor as Japan’s only act of expansion.
How to Assess It: Give students a blank map of Europe and Asia. Ask them to draw one German expansion arrow and one Japanese expansion arrow, then label each with an invaded country.

Lesson moves

Give pairs event cards and maps, then have them place German and Japanese invasions in the correct locations and sequence.
Write: How were Germany’s actions in Europe similar to Japan’s actions in Asia, and how were they different?
Play a card sort with leader, country, region, and invasion cards, awarding points for accurate matches and explanations.
Use a ports and resources map to examine why control of land, railways, oil, and shipping routes helped expanding armies.
