What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify what a buyer gives and receives, then do the same for the seller. They explain why each person chooses to make the trade, using examples from mining towns or daily life.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can describe a trade and name a clear benefit for both sides. They recognize that benefits may differ and that both people must agree to the exchange.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think only the seller benefits because the seller gets money. They may also assume both sides gain the same amount, or that any exchange counts even when someone is forced.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: A miner buys a shovel from a shopkeeper for three dollars. Explain one benefit for the miner and one for the shopkeeper.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set up a mining town store with item cards and play coins, then have pairs trade and record what each side gained.

  2. Ask students to write why a miner and a shopkeeper might both agree to trade money for a shovel.

  3. Sort scenario cards into both agree, one person is forced, or no trade, then explain each choice to a partner.

  4. Examine a grocery receipt and label what the shopper gained, what the store gained, and why both accepted the exchange.
