What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students observe the sky and notice the repeating change from day to night and back to day. They identify the sun, moon, and stars, then share observations through talk, drawings, or simple labels.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can arrange sky pictures in a repeating day, night, day sequence. They can name sky objects and compare daytime and nighttime skies using a drawing or spoken sentence.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think the moon appears only at night or that stars disappear during the day. They may view day and night as separate events instead of a repeating pattern.

How to Assess It

Give students four sky pictures to place in time order. Ask each student to name one object shown and explain one observed change.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students blue and black paper, then have them place sun, moon, and star cards where observations support seeing each object.

  2. Ask, “What changes from morning to night, and what might stay visible?” Record claims beside students’ observed evidence.

  3. Play a sequencing game with dawn, daytime, dusk, and nighttime picture cards, asking pairs to arrange and explain the repeating pattern.

  4. Have students sketch the sky at school arrival and near bedtime, then compare drawings with a partner the next day.
