What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read tables, graphs, and maps showing changes in organisms and environmental conditions. They identify patterns and explain how food, disease, weather shifts, or human actions caused changes at different ecological levels.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students make a clear claim and support it with specific data points. They distinguish an effect on one organism from effects on a population, community, or entire ecosystem.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume every environmental change affects all organisms in the same way. They may confuse a population with a community or describe correlation as proof of cause. They also may overlook indirect effects through food webs.
How to Assess It
- Give students a graph showing fish numbers before and after fertilizer runoff. Ask them to name one pattern, cite two data points, and explain one ecosystem effect.

Give teams 40 beans as food, vary the supply each round, and graph how many paper-clip animals survive.
