What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students build a diagram or physical model that tracks genetic information from parent organisms to offspring. They use the model to compare copying from one parent with combining information from two parents.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can create a labeled model showing copied genetic information in asexual reproduction and mixed allele combinations in sexual reproduction. The student can use the model to explain differences in offspring variation.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think genetically identical offspring must always look exactly alike, ignoring environmental effects and mutations. They may think sexual reproduction creates new genes or that offspring receive most traits from one parent.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Draw one model for budding and one for fertilization using allele letters. Label where the offspring's genetic information comes from and explain which process produces more variation.

  1. Use colored chromosome strips to build one budding model and one fertilization model, then compare the allele combinations in each offspring.

  2. Write a claim explaining why strawberry runners usually show less genetic variation than seedlings, using evidence from a labeled model.

  3. Play an offspring card game by copying one parent deck, then drawing allele cards from two parent decks and comparing results.

  4. Compare cloned potato plants with puppies in one litter, and identify which reproductive process explains the genetic pattern in each group.
