What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain that genes are sections of DNA found on chromosomes. They use evidence to show how chromosome copies from each parent can affect an offspring’s trait.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can trace a gene from parents to offspring using a chromosome model, Punnett square, or family data. They connect inherited gene versions to a specific trait.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think chromosomes and genes are the same thing, or that each trait is carried on its own chromosome. They may also think offspring receive traits from only one parent.
How to Assess It
- Give students a parent and offspring chromosome diagram for flower color. Ask, “How did the offspring inherit its flower color? Use two details from the diagram.”
