What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students gather information from maps, photos, models, and short texts about changes to Earth's surface. They identify the process that formed each feature and explain whether it built up or wore down land.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can connect features such as deltas, canyons, dunes, and volcanoes to the processes that formed them. They use evidence from a source or model to support each explanation.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think constructive means helpful and destructive means harmful. They may also confuse weathering with erosion or assume each landform is shaped by only one process.

How to Assess It

Show photos of a river delta and canyon. Ask students to name the main process shaping each feature, label it constructive or destructive, and cite visible evidence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Pour water through a sloped tray of sand, then mark where erosion removes sediment and deposition builds new land.

  2. Write a claim explaining how the same river can both build land and wear it away.

  3. Play a feature-process matching game with cards showing deltas, dunes, canyons, volcanoes, erosion, deposition, and eruptions.

  4. Compare satellite images of a Georgia barrier island from two years and identify where land was added or removed.
