What Students Need to Do
- Students ask focused questions about tools used to monitor hazards or reduce damage. They gather information from reliable sources and explain whether each tool predicts a process, limits its effects, or both.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can connect tools such as seismographs, weather satellites, levees, and retaining walls to specific Earth processes. They explain what each tool does and what it cannot do.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think technology can stop earthquakes, volcanoes, floods, or erosion. They may also confuse monitoring a process with predicting its exact time, place, and strength.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Choose a seismograph or levee, write one research question about it, then explain whether it predicts damage, limits damage, or both.

Ways to Teach It
Build two sand slopes, add a craft-stick retaining wall to one, spray both with water, and compare soil movement.
Discuss the prompt, "Can a seismograph prevent earthquake damage?" Support each claim with information from a short article or diagram.
