What Students Need to Do
- Students explain that a star’s apparent size and brightness depend on its distance from Earth and its actual properties. They make a claim and support it with observations, models, or data.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student explains that the Sun looks especially large and bright because it is much closer to Earth than other stars. They use relevant evidence and connect it clearly to their claim.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think the Sun is the largest or most powerful star because it looks brightest. They may also assume all stars are the same distance from Earth or that appearance shows actual size.
How to Assess It
- Ask: “Why does the Sun look brighter than other stars?” Require a claim, one piece of evidence, and an explanation connecting distance to appearance.
