What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students ask focused questions about how stars compare in size and brightness. They use pictures, models, and simple sources to describe what they notice and consider how distance affects appearance.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can ask a relevant question about whether one star is larger or brighter than another. The student can use observations or provided information to compare two stars clearly.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think all stars are the same size because they look like tiny points. They may assume the largest-looking star is physically largest or that the Sun is not a star.
How to Assess It
- Give students two star cards with different size circles and brightness bars. Ask, “Write one question that would help you compare these stars, then record one observation.”

Ways to Teach It
Use different-sized balls and battery tea lights to model stars, then have students record what each model shows about size and brightness.
Display two star photos and ask students to write, “What would you need to know to decide which star is truly larger?”
Play Star Card Match, with students pairing stars that share a size or brightness feature and explaining each match.
Compare the Sun with nighttime stars, then discuss why the nearby Sun looks larger and brighter from Earth.
