Use evidence to construct an explanation of why some organisms can thrive in one habitat and not in another.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students match an organism’s needs and traits to conditions in a Georgia habitat. They use facts about food, water, shelter, soil, temperature, or landforms to explain their match.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify where an organism is likely to thrive and cite relevant habitat evidence. They connect each piece of evidence to a specific need or trait of the organism.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think any Georgia organism can live anywhere in the state. They may name a habitat without evidence or assume organisms can choose new traits when conditions change.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A trout needs cool, oxygen-rich water. Would it thrive better in a Blue Ridge stream or a warm Coastal Plain pond, and why?

Set up trays with sand, clay, rocks, water, and plant models, then place organism cards where their listed needs are best met.
