What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine maps, photographs, and species information from Georgia. They ask focused questions that help distinguish each region’s plants, animals, and habitats.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students ask answerable questions about features such as water, shelter, plant traits, and animal needs. They use the answers to explain how two regions differ.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse a geographic region with a single habitat, or assume each species lives in only one region. They may ask broad questions that do not reveal useful differences.
How to Assess It
- Show photos of a Blue Ridge forest and a Coastal Plain marsh. Students write two questions whose answers would help tell the habitats apart.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups a Georgia map, organism cards, and habitat photos to sort, then have them write one question for each uncertain match.
Show two region photographs and ask, “What could you ask about land, water, plants, or animals to tell them apart?”
Play Region Detective by revealing one habitat clue at a time while teams ask yes-or-no questions before naming the likely region.
Use a Georgia park website to identify its region, then list questions a visitor could ask about its wildlife and plant life.
