What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students represent each teen number with one complete group of ten and some extra ones. They build and break apart models, then name both parts.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student shown 14 can build one group of ten and four extra counters. The student can also identify 14 from that model and explain 10 + 4 = 14.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count all the objects correctly but not recognize a group of ten. Some reverse teen numerals or think 14 means one plus four.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Draw 16 as a group of ten and extra ones, then complete 16 = 10 + ___.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs linking cubes and call a teen number, then have students build it, break off ten, and count the extras.
Show two models of 17 and ask students to explain which model clearly shows ten and seven more.
Play Teen Number Match with numeral cards, ten-frame pictures, and equation cards such as 10 + 6.
Pack ten crayons into a box, add loose crayons, and have students name the total from the packed ten and extras.
