What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students look at two objects and name where one sits compared with the other. They follow directions using above, below, beside, in front of, behind, and next to.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly name an object’s position from pictures and classroom setups. They can place an object from an oral direction and describe its position in a complete sentence.

Common Misconceptions

Students may reverse the named objects, saying the box is above the ball when the ball is above the box. They may use vague words like “there” or confuse in front of and behind.

How to Assess It

Place a toy bear beside a cup and ask, “Where is the bear compared with the cup?” Move it behind the cup and repeat.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a cup and toy bear, then have partners place the bear above, below, beside, in front of, or behind the cup.

  2. Show a classroom photo and ask, “Where is the backpack compared with the desk?” Require a full sentence using one position word.

  3. Play Position Simon Says, where students move a counter as directed, then take turns giving directions to a partner.

  4. Walk around the school and have students name where clocks, doors, signs, and playground equipment sit compared with nearby objects.
